Nanea Mitchell will celebrate her birthday on April, 11th. This year I had an opportunity to prepare a present for her earlier. I would like to sew her a traditional Hawaiian dress. My internet surfing brought me pictures of 1940’s Elsie Krassas Original Holoku Hawaiian Dress. After seeing it I couldn’t forget it, it became my obsession, and I decided that Nanea has to have it!
As it usually happens with the dresses that inspiring me, I stayed with a sewing machine for a whole day. I started at late evening making a pattern. Early morning I jumped out from a bed and started working: cutting out the pattern details from a fabric and sewing. Sure I had small breaks for breakfast and lunch :) And a few hours later I finished the dress with great pleasure!
I was so impatient to take pictures of the dress, but I had to remove all sewing marks first . So I washed it, then waited until it dried, ironed and put it on Nanea. Nanea looks amazing in it, doesn’t she?
The dress has a sweetheart neckline and petal sleeves. To support the neckline, the dress has a relief on the front. The dress back has a short train and relief seams as well. I made a concealed (invisible) zipper closure at the back as on the original dress. The dress has a fluffy frill at the bottom, it’s more than 2 meters long!
