Emma Woodhouse

“Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.”

“Emma” by Jane Austen.

I do like “Emma” TV serial from BBC produced in 2009 with Romola Garai as the titular heroine Emma Woodhouse. Jane Austen finished her novel in 1815 thus costumes in this serial are close for me to this epoch. I have a board on Pinterest with all costumes from serial, you may have a look.

I’ve joined to a project, yes again, where I had to sew a historical outfit. I hesitate a little between 1810s and 1850s but then I chose The Vertical Epoch. I decided to start this period from the beginning of the century :) And, of course, I used Emma’s costumes for an inspiration.

I show the final photoshoot because I had only one week to finish whole outfit so I had no time to take progress pictures.

Final photoshoot:

Valentina wears a cotton dress and a cotton spencer. The dress and the spencer were sewn by hand.

The dress has tiny buttons on the back, buttonholes were made by hand as well. The dress decorated with thin lace on the cuffs and on the hem.

The spencer has hidden clasps but very tiny buttons decorated the collar and the belt straps. The spencer also has decorative stitches on the back, folds decorated with belt straps with tiny buttons.

I also made a hat. I starched a cotton veil for a brim and formed a crown on a styrofoam ball. I decorated the hat with dark blue ribbon on the crown and used a ribbon with green colors variations to tie the hat.
